What About Social Studies Lesson Plans
Date Added: December 24, 2008 04:15:49 AM
Writing your world history lesson plans (or your US history lesson plans) doesn't warm the cockles of your heart, that doesn't mean that it can't be an enjoyable and productive thing. First things first- when you are making up lesson plans, you are doing so with your future students in mind. You haven't met them yet, but already you are anticipating their needs and interests. You might choose to first focus on making sure that the different learning styles are all represented in your lesson plans. That means that you have a plan for engaging and educating, to the best of your ability, those who are visual learners, auditory learners, and kinesthetic learners.
Each of these styles has some fairly obvious traits. Visual learners do best when they see the information. They often like to sit at the front of the class where there are no visual distractions, tend to take notes, and are likely to pay attention to a teacher's body language as well as the visual information (such as a PowerPoint or an overhead) that is being presented. An auditory learner, on the other hand, is all about listening. They tend to benefit from discussion as well. The kinesthetic learners in your class will learn by doing. They prefer hands-on activities and may have trouble sitting still.
Working to help each of these learners experience the information in a way that works for them affords you an opportunity to diversify your classroom time into different activities. This has the added benefit of helping your students stay focused. The average attention span of the kids in your classes is likely to be much shorter than the class-time itself, so you can't expect them to stay focused on a single activity for that amount of time. By switching up the activities and varying their level of interaction, you can keep shifting their focus and giving them something new to concentrate on. This is also a great way to turn up the fun by incorporating games into the mix. It really is all about capturing their attention and keeping it, after all, and if they can learn while playing a game they'll enjoy, even better. |
